BEND, OREGON — A deadly shooting at an elementary school in Bend, Oregon, has claimed the lives of three children and a teacher, leaving families and the wider community devastated. Police say the suspected attacker, a 16-year-old boy, also died after an armed community member confronted him inside the school.
The incident occurred on Thursday, October 15, at Silver Rail Elementary School, where hundreds of young pupils attend classes. Authorities are continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the attack, including whether the teenager had any connection to the school.
Children Among the Victims
Bend Police Chief Mike Krantz confirmed that the three children who died were aged five, eight and 11. A teacher was also killed in the attack.
Two other people — a seven-year-old child and a 54-year-old teacher — sustained critical injuries and were taken to hospital for treatment, according to police.
Authorities have not publicly released the names of the victims or the suspect. Investigators are also working to establish whether the teenager knew any of the pupils or staff members.
How the Shooting Unfolded
Police received the first emergency call at approximately 12:59 p.m. local time on Thursday. The caller reported that a person carrying a long gun was firing at a vehicle near the school.
Additional emergency calls soon alerted authorities that the armed suspect had entered the school grounds and moved into the building.
According to police, the teenager forced his way inside by shooting at locked doors. The incident prompted an emergency response, with officers arriving at approximately 1:02 p.m.
A community member who witnessed the unfolding violence followed the suspect into the school and confronted him with a firearm. Police subsequently confirmed that the teenager had died at the scene.
Officers then searched the building and worked to secure the area while emergency personnel attended to the victims.
Investigators have not yet established a motive for the attack, and several important questions remain unanswered.
School Community Left in Mourning
Silver Rail Elementary School serves children from kindergarten through fifth grade and has approximately 450 pupils and more than 40 staff members, according to officials.
Following the shooting, authorities arranged for students to be reunited with their families at a separate location. Parents waited anxiously for information about their children as emergency responders and school officials worked to manage the aftermath.
The Bend-La Pine School District announced the cancellation of classes, school activities and sporting events on Friday to allow the community time to grieve and recover.
District superintendent Steven Cook expressed sorrow over the tragedy, describing the incident as devastating for the school community and extending sympathy to the families affected.
Oregon Governor Tina Kotek also expressed condolences and acknowledged the emotional toll on the families, students and staff members. She praised the community member who intervened during the attack.
Investigation Continues
Law enforcement officials are continuing to examine the events leading up to the shooting. The suspect's identity has not been publicly disclosed, and authorities have not confirmed whether he had any previous relationship with the school.
The FBI is assisting local authorities with the investigation, according to public statements from federal officials.
The shooting has once again drawn attention to school safety and the persistent challenge of gun violence in the United States. Incidents involving young victims have repeatedly raised questions about how schools can better protect students and staff from armed attacks.
For the families who lost loved ones in Bend, however, the immediate concern is the profound loss left behind. As the investigation continues, the community faces the difficult task of mourning those killed while supporting the injured and helping children cope with the traumatic experience.
This is a developing story.Further details may emerge as police continue their investigation and release additional information.
