The fight over the future of the Kennedy Center intensified Thursday after board members backed plans to restore President Donald Trump’s name to the performing arts institution and temporarily close most of the venue for major renovations.
During a lengthy virtual meeting, the board voted to add Trump’s name to the building’s exterior. Under the proposal, the facade would carry the name “The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts Restored and Renovated By President Donald J. Trump.”
The board also approved plans to name the plaza in front of the center after Trump and close most of the facility for approximately two years while extensive renovation work takes place.
The moves could create a new confrontation with the federal courts. A judge has previously ordered Trump's name removed from the Kennedy Center after it was added to the building under his allies' leadership.
The dispute has become another major political battle surrounding the iconic Washington performing arts institution, which was established as a national memorial to President John F. Kennedy.
Rep. Joyce Beatty, a Democrat from Ohio and an ex-officio member of the Kennedy Center board, has criticized the changes. Her attorneys argue that the board's actions could challenge the authority of the federal court order.
The proposed renovations would represent one of the most significant changes to the Kennedy Center in years. Supporters of the plan say the work is needed to modernize the facility, while opponents argue that the changes are being used to further Trump's political influence over the institution.
The controversy is likely to continue as the court considers whether the board's latest actions comply with its previous order.
