LeBron James has made what he describes as his “last decision” regarding his NBA future, announcing that he will continue his legendary career with the Philadelphia 76ers after previously considering retirement.
The four-time NBA champion revealed Friday that he has chosen Philadelphia as his next destination following his departure from the Los Angeles Lakers.
At 41 years old, James is set to enter a record-extending 24th NBA season and will become a member of his fourth NBA franchise. Throughout his career, he has won championships with all three of his previous teams — the Cleveland Cavaliers, Miami Heat, and Los Angeles Lakers.
According to Klutch Sports Group CEO Rich Paul, James has agreed to a two-year, $8 million contract with a player option. ESPN’s Shams Charania first reported the agreement, and CNN Sports later confirmed the reported contract details.
James explained his decision in a series of social media posts, saying he needed time after the season ended to reflect on whether he still had the passion and motivation to continue playing.
“I thought I was done when the season ended,” James said. “I wasn’t ready to announce it, and I knew I needed some time to really decide, but I was pretty sure I played my last game.”
The NBA superstar said that after taking time to reflect, he realized he still has the desire to compete at the highest level.
“I still truly love this game, and I have more to give,” James wrote.
James said his decision was not motivated by money or personal reasons, but by his continued desire to compete for another championship.
“I still want to sacrifice. I still want to work. I still want to grind. I still want to compete, to win and to have a chance at the feeling of winning another championship,” he said.
The veteran forward expressed confidence that he can help the 76ers compete for a title and said he is excited for the opportunity to connect with a new fan base.
“I believe I can help make the Philadelphia 76ers a championship team,” James said. “I am so excited to energize a new fan base and start this incredible journey one last time.”
James also thanked his former teams and fans, saying he will always have a special connection with Los Angeles, Miami, and Northeast Ohio.
With another season ahead, LeBron James will now look to add another chapter to one of the greatest careers in NBA history as he pursues a fifth championship.
