The son of Kansas City Chiefs assistant coach Eric Bieniemy has been arrested and charged in connection with the shooting of his mother, Mia Bieniemy, authorities in Virginia confirmed Monday.
According to the Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded late Sunday night to a reported shooting at a home in Ashburn, Virginia. The residence was previously associated with the family from Bieniemy’s time with the Washington Commanders.
Authorities said they found 57-year-old Mia Bieniemy suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. She was transported to a local hospital, where officials reported she was in stable condition Monday.
Elijah Zion Bieniemy, 27, the son of Eric and Mia Bieniemy, was arrested early Monday in connection with the incident. He faces charges including malicious wounding, use of a firearm in the commission of a felony, and discharge of a firearm inside a dwelling. He is currently being held without bond at the Loudoun County Adult Detention Center.
The sheriff’s office said the investigation remains ongoing.
Eric Bieniemy was with the Chiefs during training camp activities in St. Joseph, Missouri, on Sunday but was not present for Monday’s practice session. Team officials said he was away to focus on his family.
Chiefs head coach Andy Reid expressed support for Bieniemy and his family following the news.
“Our hearts go out to Eric Bieniemy and his family,” Reid said. “Mia is stable, which is a plus. She’s a wonderful person, and we’re all hoping for the best as the family works through this difficult situation.”
Reid added that Bieniemy has strong support from the organization and that the team would continue moving forward while allowing him time to handle the situation.
Offensive duties during Bieniemy’s absence will be shared by Chiefs staff members as the team continues preparations during training camp.
The investigation into the shooting remains active, and authorities have not released additional details.
